This process of socialism in one country brought more and more people upwards and promoted them because they were being educated, they were being recruited into institutions and recruited into the lower levels of the bureaucracy.

And this created immense pressure from the bottom on gatekeepers who had the prejudices that they inherited from the previous era of history, the 20s, and all the class and bourgeois prejudices that they came from.

And that eventually this became a confrontation between the new mass of people that were uplifted by Stalinism and Stalin's rule, and the kind of gatekeepers who came from a prior class position.

So, Marxism would understand this as a social phenomenon and try to understand what was actually happening in the change within society that makes this make sense, that makes sense of what's going on.

And it wouldn't reduce it to the ideas of this or that person or the whims and fancies of this or that agent or will, right?

So, that's an example of what Marxism looks like by way of analysis.

Russian peasantry had a culture of common ownership of land historically.

The Russian form of the commune actually goes quite deep into the history of Russian history.

Well, even before serfdom, this was the case.

The Russian commune, the mere form, the peasants would run it collectively and they would run it communally.

After the abolition of serfdom, they didn't automatically become the kulaks.

That had to happen because of the Stolypin reforms.

The Stolypin reforms is lifting up the people.

In any case, the Stolypin reforms created an anti-social, individualistic type of demographic among the peasants who primarily were people that accumulated grain, hoarded it, and used it to subject other peasants to usurious forms of servitude and subjugation.

Are able to weather that.

But for the people that are hoarding grain and people who are gobbling up land monopolistically, they're the people you would have to go to to be solvent.

Yes, they were usurers.

You don't know that the kulaks were usurers who subjected grain.

They were monopolistic rentier parasites who would have a model of they would have this agricultural model because they're in close proximity to the czarist state, actually, not even because the survival of the fittest.

And they would have solvent plots of land that would allow them to reject all hierarchy then?

The kulaks were immensely unpopular.

They were detested and hated by the peasantry themselves.

And when it came time for the industrialization of Russia, you had the scissors crisis, even in the mid-1920s.

But it still corresponded to a scissors crisis where industrialization was not able to happen because the price of food kept getting jacked up because these monopolistic kulaks would inflate the prices of grain in order to expropriate and take as much as they could from the center, from the state.

And so the countryside could not be developed and industrialization could not take off.

Now, these were not ideal conditions.

The Soviet Union had been invaded during the Civil War by a coalition of dozens and dozens of different countries, in case you don't know the history, right?

Stalin correctly anticipated when he took power that they have 10 years to industrialize.

They set like a few whatever legions.

They didn't actually put up a front.
