they somehow attempt to make it seem as though they're in more continuity with

Marx and what Marx and Engels believed, and Marxism more generally. So, you know, my basic

response is twofold. The first thing I'd say is that

it's true that

oftentimes Marx and Engels

would emphasize

that

communism you know in contrast

to social democracy a term they hated

they hated the name at least in contrast to social democracy, a term they hated, they hated the name at least. In contrast to the

various socialisms of their day, communism did entail a much more comprehensively revolutionary

position. And they oftentimes did accentuate that fact in their writings.

But in the exact

same proportion, and this is where

the left comms don't fucking understand, in the

exact same proportion, they also

erred on the side of caution.

You know, they mistrusted phrase

mongering. They mistrusted

this infantile,

negate and abolish everything attitude.

They were simultaneously, ruthlessly

pragmatic and

realistic and grounded.

And they believed that the

movement, the proletary movement, the communist movement, had to be based on a concrete analysis of concrete conditions. They believed that it had to be based in reality, not the reality we wanted, even if we're only defining that reality in terms of a negation, but it had to be grounded

and rooted in the world we live in today. They had no problem, you know, making compromises and so on and so on,

and acquiescing to the world as it existed. If you read the 10 planks of the Communist Manifesto, you don't see a manifesto that's calling for the abolition of everything. So how does this dichotomy arise between the kind of revolutionary principles of communism and this side of realism and pragmatism and so on and so on. Well, Kotsky and the thinkers of the Second International

try to formulate this distinction on the basis of something they called.

And I hope guerrillas listen to what I say i hope you when you argue with people you

apply what i teach you because i don't want to speak in vain they called it the minimal versus

the maximal program and the idea is that the minimal program were a series of reforms that socialists should fight for in the here and the now that could be concretely applied to reality.

So something that's just concretely relevant to what people want now.

That would be the minimal program, right? Then they had this

idea, this notion, this concept of the maximal program. The maximal program is this kind of more

unfettered outlook of, well, we aim to construct a new society which brooks no compromise this is the

program of communism of socialism when we take power but the minimal program was more or less a

vehicle to build the conditions of getting into power.

A program that the masses could rally around and which would simultaneously accentuate contradictions.

So to be stupid, kind of, for example, a minimal program of health care reform, universal health care.

You just fight for this minimal program, and it's along the way, it's going to reveal class antagonism.

It's going to build the context for class struggle in the field of politics

right so they had a distinction between minimal and maximal program and then when social

democracy was repudiated by the experience of history so too was the distinction between minimal and maximal

program. And that's what led to the left-wing childishness that Lenin talked about, right?

Because left communism defined itself, you know, in contrast to social democracy.

And I would actually put Trotsky in this camp, actually, to be honest.

But it defined itself on the basis of attempting to abolish distinction, that precise distinction,

not just abolish the terms of the distinction, the minimal and maximal program, which had been,

to be fair, outmoded by history history but the very distinction itself between the maximal program of communism

you know the society that's defining itself negatively primarily by the absence of certain

qualities and characteristics and the concrete struggles that are relevant to the class

struggle that exists now they denied the latter existed altogether they said let's just full

communism abolish everything which is of course an absurd and impossible position because it means nothing concretely but this is how they interpreted the breakdown of social democracy and this is how these it's like these very it's like these zealot zealot factions uh in in the roman judean roman times right that existed

one of these factions this is what they are they it's kind of like a religious sect honestly but it bases itself in this

notion that you know marxism and communism has to measure itself in terms of the immediate and

instantaneous advocacy for the complete abolition of everything and and what does

this mean concretely nothing of course of course it means nothing lenin actually goes into

quite some detail about this and left-wing communism right for example he talks about how they say the you know the

left communists say that uh parliament has been discredited you know the illusion of parliamentary

politics has been discredited

and Lenin said

well for us

yes, for us it has

but for the masses it hasn't

you're not living in reality

you're living in

the maximal reality in your own head,

but you're not applying that to reality in any way that's concrete. So Lenin still,

although he doesn't necessarily affirm the minimal maximal program, he does affirm the

distinction. He does affirm that the distinction itself is something even more true than the

terms of the distinction, which is to say there is a difference between the revolutionary

force of communism and how we translate, apply that to reality. The revolutionary force of

communism is like a guide, you know?

And actually, this is what I want to talk about more.

It's a guide, it's a guiding principle, if you will, in some respect, that you have no illusions. You don't have illusions that attach you ideologically or metaphysically to the existing

institutions of the world. You understand history is a history of revolutionary change. So communism

is this guiding principle that allows you to, it gives you a kind of insight into the contradictions within the world concretely.

And it's a guide that should help you strategically maneuver through this world, not propose a new world or a world that is defined by the negation of the current one.

It's still this world you exist in and you struggle within, but by being guided by communist principles, you are not fettered by the prejudices, the narrow prejudices of any specific institution within our society, of any specific division of mental labor within our society. You can see things integrally, you know, as a whole.

And simultaneously, you don't allow fetters to restrict the scope and scale of your revolutionary outlook.

But just because you don't have these ideological and metaphysical fetters

restricting the scale of your outlook as far as how you understand revolutionary change

doesn't mean that's a substitute for the concrete work that goes

into partaking and participating in the revolutionary changes of history. So the distinction for Lenin

and Leninism and Mali is absolutely an operative distinction the terms of the distinction

the rigid distinction itself the terms are not are not carried over from social democracy

but the distinction itself is important. And so this is an insight of Marxism,

okay, that left comms don't understand. Now, second of all, I want to talk more about what is the meaning of the maximal

program of communism? Very vaguely, it seems to define itself, if we're being generous,

in the case of Marx and Engels,

as a revolutionary outlook,

which doesn't restrict itself to needing to compromise with existing institutions and so on and so on.

Total and comprehensively revolutionary outlook.

But in practice today, the maximal program of communism is a channel for infantile

nihilism,

infantile nihilism,

an excuse to basically withdraw nihilism, infantile nihilism,

an excuse to basically withdraw from the world, withdraw

from having any skin in the game within the world,

and more or less,

as far

as the nihilism aspect is concerned,

declare all things in the world abolished, family,

you know, being a normal human being, whatever,

declare that all of these things, it's just a kind of, um, really, it's actually an idealism when you think about it.

Almost a solipsistic kind of idealism, right?

But it's a, it's a type of infantilism.

And there's a strong distinction between communism, unapologetic communism as a revolutionary

outlook that Marx and Engels did insist upon at the expense of the, you know, the LaSalle of

their day, you know, or these other kind of charlatan hucksters for LaSalle.

Is there between that and the left com infantile nihilism?

One, in Marx and Engels' day, the revolutionary outlook of communism was concretely rooted in real existing, actual real existing phenomena within

society. The revolutionary changes Marx analyzed, for example, in France. There, the various

qualified forms of socialism played a very concrete role in imposing a fetter upon revolutionary change imposing terms and conditions well the revolution can't go this far the revolution had a tendency to go that far there was a latent

dormant tendency of proletarian revolutionary change that meant something concrete at the time the

working masses of france were ready to fucking go they were ready to fucking topple the state and and build a completely new principle of of uh dictatorship and and so on a new state power they were ready this was the the the the shadow of

blank we blank wisdom right that was a real thing it wasn't it wasn't an assertion derived from principle that, okay, I declare society wrong. We have to

abolish all of society. No, there was a real existing tendency within French, in this case, French society

to basically

overthrow the entire status quo.

And by the status quo,

this is the operative and important thing.

The state machine,

the ruling institutions of society. Now I have a radical proposal with respect to dark

Mali or Mali in general. The maximal program of communism, when you distill the essence of what it means in practice it's

actually a principle of state dictatorship which brooks no compromise with

any existing or established class or institution within society it is an ultimate unlimited power in

practice now that this is deviating from traditional and conventional interpretations of the meaning of the maximal

program but in practice this is actually what it was communism means communist dictatorship

what communism means in practice in the case of france in a civil war in

france for example that marks was writing about communism and the meaning of the proletariat's

revolutionary outlook which broke no compromise with any established class or institution in society or terms and conditions was a radically autonomous dictatorial principle of state power which sought to assume a kind of unconditional power in the stead of the existing state, which did not need to compromise, which did not need to impose upon itself terms and conditions. Because the various bourgeois and petty bourgeois socialists

that Marx and Marx was writing

about at that time were

concretely imposing a

fetter upon a real existing

revolutionary movement.

They were basically

like AOC or they were concretely taking an inherently revolutionary

momentum and basically selling themselves short. Like, okay, well, we won't go that far. You know,

okay, well, we're in.

They assumed that their metaphysics, their metaphysical, that they had the ability to discursively and metaphysically negotiate with the revolutionary change.

And this is what Marx and Engels found it necessary to comprehensively rebuke.

You cannot discursively negotiate with the revolutionary force.

You don't get to say, well, I'm for the revolution, but no, the revolution is its own force.

You don't get to discursively or metaphysically negotiated. You don't get to say that the revolution was being interpreted by all the educated classes of

society as communism or as socialism so the way these political hucksters it was a form of

compromise they would say well I'm for socialism.

It's just, what Marx described is that these are different transit points of the revolution were fighting against each other.

Some people said, well, I believe in socialism, but but not this far and then some of you said well i believe in uh social socialism but not as far as that so there

there are these different stages of the revolutionary transformation that was being

anticipated by society and different political factions would spring up and oppose themselves against one and another it's kind of hilarious it's like this is kind of like how there's leftist infighting.

I'm a Soctem, or I'm a Democratic socialist, or I'm a socialist. I wouldn't go so far as communist, but you see, in France, in the mid-19th century, this actually had a concrete meaning, okay?

In the sense that there was a real existing shadow of revolutionary change

that was being articulated in terms of the overthrow of capitalist society. And it was led by the working masses, the proletariat. So the communist position, the maximal position, which was just, you know what, fuck all that,

unconditional fealty to the revolution.

The total comprehensive overthrow of our entire society in every respect, right?

The point of that wasn't abolished bedtime and declare everything oppression and microaggressions.

That wasn't the point.

The point was a logic of relating to revolutionary change, which was unconditional.

The understanding that it cannot, it's a force in its own right

which cannot be negotiated with which cannot be discursively you cannot set terms and conditions

upon it right and simultaneously this then corresponds to a principle of dictatorial power

because a principle of dictatorial power unlike for example fascism doesn't need to

negotiate doesn't need to bro, does it need to break compromises

with existing institutions

or corporates

within society?

You know, there's a

very powerful wisdom

of communism

that is beyond nationalism beyond nations beyond any particular aspect within

society in general why is that such an effective governing principle for actually facilitating the health of nations and families and so on and so on.

Because it represents a type of unlimited power which doesn't have to discursively or metaphysically negotiate its terms and conditions the cpc is a

communist party of china the communist aspect is still there and there's in a certain irreducible sense

they are above nationalism but it's because they're above nationalism because

they're not bounded by a specific notion of the chinese nation that they have been given

the creative and operative freedom to serve the Chinese people because they don't have to bound

themselves to the metaphysics of a Chinese nation. They don't have to allow it to be imposed

as a fetter that restricts the scope and the scale by which they do govern the Chinese nation, right?

And there's something about that that's important to understand from the perspective of Mali, from the perspective of Marxism.

That's what communism is.

Communism insists

that the way in which

modern civilization relates

to its own particular

realities is false.

There's a false

conceit within bourgeois civilization. Well, I'm a nationalist. So, I'm preserving the nation because I'm a nationalist. Okay, you've preserved the nation ideologically in your head. What the real one you see you have discursively

created a nation in your head you've turned it into an idea but what about the real and

objective one you see there's a distinction that modern bourgeois civilization actually doesn't recognize, but communism and Marxism does.

And communism asserts that the relationship of a given ideologist or something to the real existing thing is such that no ideas and no products of mental activity can impose a fetter upon the terms and

the objective existence of humanity and that's why in a sense communism is the way

because communism means i am not going to impose an assumption about the nature of humanity, the trajectory of humanity, what is the limit of humanity?

What's beautiful about the communist outlook when you think about it is that the communist outlook more or less entails that whatever this is it is radically beyond anything we can reduce to the province of any given product of individual activity.

It's an irreducibly collective reality.

We cannot say that it's an ideal or a concept or anything like that there's something about the material reality of social existence that is inherently in some sense communism that is what the content of communism actually is communism is the way in which we

objectively and materially constitute a social existence to be that is where and what communism is um and the bourgeois outlook doesn't actually negate this reality or somehow make it less real, but it doesn't allow us to recognize it.

You understand? The bourgeois outlook imposes fetters and terms and conditions upon our ability to relate to our socially, our materially existing social existence, right?

Our materially real social existence, whatever it so happens to be.

So that's the logic of communism.

Communism basically says uh that the truth of our existence and our reality is exterior

to any metaphysical construct.

Okay?

So it's to this extent that communism abolishes everything, the family, the state, and so on and so on.

It doesn't actually abolish these things insofar as they're materially real it abolishes

the metaphysical attachment to these things the elevation and raising of these things to a

product of the mind, right?

Which creates an attachment of sorts to a metaphysically rendered version of the world that is alienated from the real one does communism entail the destruction of all

particulars and particular determinations and hierarchies and of course it doesn't but it does entail the abolition of raising any of these given things understand the kind of negative or revolutionary aspect of communism.

They interpreted as if everything comes short of the pure ideal.

They interpreted in the sense

that, well, nothing could possibly exist.

Communism couldn't

possibly exist because its terms and conditions

are just too

great and granted. So, well, no,

there are no terms. The whole point

is there's no terms and conditions.

There is no criterion by which we can measure whether communism has prevailed or not.

Because communism has already prevailed, objectively.

It's the real

movement and force

responsible for change

within history. It's in motion already.

You can't I say,

this is not pure communism. There's no

pure communism. There's no such thing.

There's communism communism and this opens a continent

of understanding and comprehension that had been previously occluded to thinking consciousness so this is the meaning of communism communism then becomes a practical principle that we relate to that we articulate correctly it's not a blueprint it's not it's not any kind of measurement of society it's not any kind of terms and conditions of society. That's the point.
